Nymor Martell
Fire & BloodNymor Martell succeeded his mother, Meria Martell, as Prince of Dorne in 13 AC and ended the First Dornish War by pursuing a settlement rather than further slaughter. Though elderly and in failing health, he sent his daughter and heir Deria to King’s Landing with the skull of Meraxes and a peace proposal for King Aegon. The terms themselves are not disclosed, but Aegon accepted them, and the war gave way to a treaty of eternal peace.
Succession and the decision for peace
Meria Martell died in 13 AC after resisting the Targaryen conquest of Dorne. Her son Nymor, then sixty years old and already in poor health, succeeded her as Lord of Sunspear and Prince of Dorne. He had no appetite for continuing the bloodshed. Instead, he began his rule by sending a delegation to King’s Landing, making peace his first decisive act as prince.
The embassy was led by Deria, Nymor’s daughter and his own heir. Its mission carried both a material offering and a political proposal: Deria brought back the skull of Meraxes, the dragon lost in Dorne, and presented Nymor’s terms to Aegon. The return of the skull gave the mission a tangible connection to the war’s cost, while the offer put an end to that conflict within reach.
The embassy at King’s Landing
Nymor’s proposal met resistance at court. Queen Visenya opposed peace without Dorne’s submission, and members of the king’s council echoed her position. Orys Baratheon urged punitive treatment of Deria, while Lord Oakheart sent a particularly extreme proposal directed against the envoy. These suggestions made the question of peace inseparable from the safety of the person sent to negotiate it.
Aegon rejected the proposals against Deria. He treated her as an envoy who had come under a banner of peace and promised that she would not be harmed beneath his roof. His protection of her preserved the possibility of negotiation even as his council pressed for a harsher response to Dorne.
Aegon’s response and the end of the war
Aegon read Nymor’s words in open court while seated on the Iron Throne, then burned the letter and did not speak of it again. That night he mounted Balerion and flew across Blackwater Bay to Dragonstone. He returned the following morning and agreed to the terms Nymor had proposed. The narrative does not disclose what in the letter prompted this change, leaving the interval between Aegon’s public silence and his decision as a strikingly unresolved moment.
Aegon soon signed a treaty of eternal peace with Dorne. The agreement ended the First Dornish War, which had lasted from 4 to 13 AC. Nymor’s reign therefore began with a reversal of the policy of continued fighting: instead of seeking further victories, he used a carefully constituted embassy to secure an end to the war.
Place in the realm’s reconciliation
The settlement belongs to the wider effort under Aegon I to reconcile the conquered kingdoms to Targaryen rule. Aegon’s court and councils drew people from across the realm, and marriages between noble houses were arranged to bind distant regions together. Nymor’s treaty was a distinct diplomatic settlement, not one of those marriage alliances, but it marked the conclusion of the most protracted conflict with the Targaryens and established peace with Dorne. His significance rests chiefly in that choice: the aging prince inherited a war and made the pursuit of its end the first business of his reign.
